"Gaharo Hill has a special place in the heart of Long Miles Coffee Project. The first washing station built by Long Miles rests at the feet of Gaharo Hill. For Long Miles, Gaharo farmers are neighbors and co-workers—many of the dedicated washing station employees and their families call Gaharo home.


Gaharo enjoys gentle misty mornings warming up to equatorial afternoons. Temperature ranges from 55°F to 77°F. The trees soak up 40 to 60 inches of rain during Burundi’s rainy season (November to April). Tea competes with coffee on Gaharo, wrapping the hill in a patchwork quilt of every imaginable green. Beans, sweet potato, cassava, and bananas sustain farming families throughout the year.


Gaharo is a hill that grows almost everything its people eat but struggles with the fertility of its soil. This year, Gaharo has been the site of a unique pilot project—our Coffee Scouts program. Long Miles scouts are employed throughout the year to do various seasonal projects including an organic pesticide campaign, fertilization, mulching, pruning, farmer education and agronomic research. Gaharo farmers continue to hope for better education and greater stability on the hill they call home.
